COLOMBO: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Niroshana, 41, was fatally shot outside his home in Ambalangoda, Galle district, on Tuesday night (16 July), local reports said.

The incident took place in the presence of his wife and two children. Police have yet to apprehend the unidentified shooter, and a thorough investigation is under way. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Niroshana, known for his right-arm fast bowling and capabilities as a lower-order batsman, was considered a promising talent early in his career. Between 2001 and 2004, he played 12 first-class and 8 List-A matches for Galle Cricket Club, scoring over 300 runs and taking 19 wickets.

He made his debut for the Sri Lankan U19 team in 2000, participating in under-19 Test and ODI cricket for two years, and captained the team in 10 matches. Under his leadership, notable players such as Farveez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga emerged, later representing Sri Lanka at the highest level.

Despite his early potential, Niroshana’s career did not progress significantly, with his last competitive match taking place in December 2004.
