David Letterman surprises Jimmy Kimmel with long-awaited Netflix invite

David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel

David Letterman used his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to extend a long-overdue invitation to the host himself for his Netflix interview series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

Midway through their conversation on Tuesday night, Letterman casually told Kimmel he should appear on the show. When Kimmel asked which one he meant, Letterman clarified it was My Next Guest. Kimmel immediately said he would love to take part, prompting loud applause from the studio audience.

Kimmel then joked that he had spent years quietly wondering why the invitation had never come. Letterman blamed the delay on Netflix, a punchline that drew another round of laughter. Kimmel accepted the explanation instantly.

During the exchange, Letterman also praised the long-form style of his Netflix series, referencing his recent sit-down with Adam Sandler. He said the extended format allows him to spend meaningful time with guests he has known for decades.

Kimmel has long described Letterman as his broadcasting hero. His appearance also comes shortly after ABC renewed his Jimmy Kimmel Live! contract, ensuring he continues fronting the late-night show for several more years.

The sixth season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman premieres on Netflix on 16 December. With the show already renewed for a seventh season, fans are now expecting Kimmel to finally take his seat opposite Letterman.
