SYDNEY: Pakistan batting star Babar Azam began the new year in fine form, scoring an unbeaten half-century to guide Sydney Sixers to a convincing six-wicket victory over Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL) on New Year’s Day.

Chasing a target of 165, the Sixers reached the total in 19.1 overs, losing four wickets along the way. Babar anchored the chase with a composed and confident innings, remaining not out on 58 off 46 balls, which included four boundaries and a six. It was his second half-century of the tournament and another reminder of his class in the shortest format.

Earlier, Melbourne Renegades, featuring Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, posted 164 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Despite some resistance in the middle order, the Renegades were unable to fully capitalize, as disciplined bowling from the Sixers restricted them to a manageable total.

Babar’s knock proved decisive, steadying the innings and keeping the required run rate under control. His partnership-building and calm presence at the crease ensured there were no late scares for the Sixers, who secured an important win as the competition intensifies.

The match also came amid growing attention on the return of key Australian players ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, adding further significance to the contest.
