KARACHI: Pakistan has taken a significant step towards establishing itself as a technology and export powerhouse with the launch of the country’s first Google Chromebook assembly line. The event, held on Tuesday, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Khan, who described it as “a defining moment” in the nation’s digital transformation.

Speaking at the Future Summit in Karachi on Wednesday, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the initiative reflects the growing potential of Pakistan’s technology and maritime sectors. He highlighted that Google intends to position Pakistan as an export hub, signalling increasing confidence in the country’s production capabilities.

“Google’s plan to make Pakistan an export hub aligns with our vision for AI-driven growth,” Aurangzeb said. “There are enormous opportunities to expand the blue economy and create high-value jobs for our youth.”

The minister urged young people to focus on developing digital and technical skills to tap into opportunities in coding, blockchain, and AI-driven industries. He said that equipping the workforce with such skills will help Pakistan capture a larger share of global technology markets.

Aurangzeb described the nation’s economy as moving in the right direction and stressed that sustainable growth depends on production-driven development. “The private sector is crucial for economic progress,” he said. “Our focus will remain on the IT and maritime sectors to transform Pakistan into an export-oriented economy.”

He also pointed to signs of economic improvement recognised by international rating agencies and global institutions, noting a 9 percent increase in corporate profits. The minister said the government has expanded the tax net, bringing in 900,000 new filers, and emphasised that digitisation will enhance transparency. “Egypt has even requested to learn from our FBR reforms,” he added.

Structural reforms remain a key part of the government’s agenda, Aurangzeb said, along with creating an ecosystem that leverages recent diplomatic successes. He confirmed that 24 state-owned enterprises will be privatised, and Pakistan International Airlines is expected to be fully privatised before the end of the year.

The launch of the Chromebook assembly line is being seen as a turning point for Pakistan’s technology sector. Analysts say it could pave the way for increased foreign investment and signal a new era of innovation, production, and exports.
