WEB DESK: Federal Minister for Information, Attaullah Tarar, hailed the court martial and sentencing of former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed as a landmark moment for justice and institutional integrity in Pakistan.

Speaking to Hum News, Tarar stated, “I believe today is a significant day for Pakistan.” He emphasised that the conviction, following a 15-month trial, was a clear demonstration of the rule of law. “Faiz Hameed was sentenced after all charges were proven,” he said. “The decision is according to the law and based on justice.”

Tarar framed the sentence as a necessary punishment for grave misconduct. “Faiz Hameed misused his authority,” he declared. “A person who oppressed people has been punished. A person who crossed the red line has been punished.” He also noted Hameed’s separate conviction in the Top City housing scandal.

Crucially, the minister presented the verdict as powerful evidence of the military’s internal accountability. “The process of self-accountability within the army is strong,” Tarar asserted. “Everyone has witnessed an example of it.” He concluded by signaling that the scrutiny was not over, announcing that “further investigations into the political matters involving Faiz Hameed will take place.”

Earlier today, Former DG ISI Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed was sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment after a Field General Court Martial found him guilty on four charges, including involvement in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, misuse of authority and causing harm to civilians. This marks the first time a former ISI chief has received such a punishment. The court martial, conducted under the Pakistan Army Act, began in August 2024 and concluded after 15 months. The ISPR said Hameed was given full legal rights and may appeal. Separate investigations into his alleged political interference remain ongoing.
