MUMBAI: Saira Banu, wife of celebrated music composer AR Rahman, has announced their separation after 29 years of marriage. 

Indian media reported that Saira’s lawyer released a statement citing “significant emotional strain and insurmountable differences” as the reasons for the separation. 

The couple, who tied the knot in 1995 and share three children, has requested privacy as they navigate this challenging period.

Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, issued an official statement on her behalf, explaining the decision: “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. This decision follows significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira emphasised that this decision stems from pain and agony. She requests privacy and understanding from the public as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life.” 

The statement underscores the emotional toll of the decision while appealing for respect and privacy for the couple and their family.
