RYIADH: Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal have strengthened their defence by signing former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari from Serie A side Fiorentina, the club announced on Sunday. The move comes as Al-Hilal prepare for crucial upcoming matches vs league rivals.
With Kalidou Koulibaly still away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, Mari’s arrival provides a timely boost to Al-Hilal’s backline. The 32-year-old Spanish defender featured in 16 games for Fiorentina across all competitions this season.
“Al-Hilal have signed a contract with Spanish defender Pablo Mari to join the club from Italian side Fiorentina on a six-month deal, with an option to extend for another year,” the Saudi club said in a statement.
Mari brings a wealth of experience to Al-Hilal, having lifted the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2020 and the Copa Libertadores with Brazil’s Flamengo in 2019. The club will now rely on him as they aim to secure key victories in the coming fixtures vs their main rivals.
