KABUL: The Afghan Taliban have expressed optimism for enhanced relations with Pakistan’s newly formed government.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the central spokesperson for the Taliban government in Afghanistan, conveyed their aspirations for the new Pakistani administration to address the issues faced by Afghan refugees within Pakistan.
He highlighted the significance of nurturing a positive relationship with Pakistan across economic, diplomatic, cultural, and religious domains, expressing hope that the new government will prioritize these aspects.
The relationship between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban has been complex and fraught with challenges. Historically, Pakistan has been seen as a supporter of the Taliban, particularly during the group’s early years in the 1990s.
However, since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, tensions have escalated, particularly over the disputed Afghanistan-Pakistan border known as the Durand Line. Clashes along this border have increased, and despite Pakistan’s efforts to maintain diplomatic ties, the trust between the two nations has been undermined.
Both countries have had to navigate these tensions while dealing with their respective internal crises. The evolving geopolitical landscape has also played a role in the changing dynamics between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, with both sides adjusting their perspectives and policies in response to the regional shifts.
The current hope expressed by the Afghan Taliban for better relations with Pakistan’s new government may be a step towards addressing these longstanding issues.
