LAHORE: A 13-year-old boy, who was beaten and tortured by a seminary teacher in Lahore two days back, succumbed to head injuries on Sunday, doctors and police said.

The boy, Anas, 13, who had skipped the seminary classes due to rain, was tortured by the seminary teacher, identified as Shoab. The boy had suffered serious head injuries, doctors said.

The boy remained in hospital for two days, however, he succumbed to his wounds.

According to the doctors, the boy had suffered from brain hemorrhage that proved fatal.

According to the Milat Park police, the seminary teacher has been arrested and charged with murder.

Torture of seminary students by their teachers is not a rare occurrence in Pakistan, where many children attend religious schools, known as madrassas, for free or low-cost education.

The Pakistani government has banned corporal punishment in schools and madrassas, but the law is rarely enforced and many teachers continue to use violence as a method of teaching.
