Weekly borrowing: Govt acquires over Rs247 billion in debt

WEB DESK: The government of Pakistan borrowed an additional Rs247.89 billion during the week ending August 30. This brings the total borrowing for the fiscal year 2025 to Rs439.67 billion.

The money was divided into three main categories. The government borrowed Rs248.84 billion for budgetary support, while Rs951.06 million was used to pay off loans for commodity operations, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Another Rs0.97 million was borrowed for other expenses.

As a result, the total borrowing for the current fiscal year adds up to Rs680.95 billion for budgetary support, Rs239.54 billion for paying off commodity operations, and Rs1.74 billion for other expenses.

The central bank and scheduled banks are the two main sources of funds for budgetary support. So far this fiscal year, the government has borrowed Rs44.13 billion from the SBP.

According to Mettis Global, the federal government repaid Rs176.62 billion, the provincial government borrowed Rs246.34 billion, the AJK government repaid Rs14.79 billion, and the GB government repaid Rs10.8 billion.

Meanwhile, scheduled banks lent a total of Rs636.82 billion. From this, the federal government borrowed Rs660.33 billion, while the provincial government repaid Rs23.51 billion.
